As much as I love an intimate wedding, the big celebrations get me just as excited! Especially when they’re like this beautiful wedding at Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur, Colorado. I had the pleasure of being the second shooter for my girl, Sabrina over at Mak Polny Photo, for her high school buddies, Marc and Maddie’s big day.
If you’re new to the wedding industry lingo, second shooters are typically hired for a few reasons.
- When the event space is sprawling or has multiple key locations to photograph and one photographer wouldn’t be able to adequately cover everything in a timely manner. This is especially helpful if the location that the couple is getting ready at different locations or if there’s a lot of details to cover.
- When there’s a bigger guest list (I usually suggest this for anything over 100 people). Catching all of those candid moments of everyone attending is tough to do when there’s just one of you!
- If you want more shots or multiple angles of your day at once. This is something I like to offer to clients who want drone footage of their day. It’s so much easier and time saving to do this with two people working together creatively.
- For added insurance in case a card corrupts or equipment fails. Knock on wood, this has never happened to me, but I’ve heard many horror stories.
You’ll also notice that most second shooters won’t take the bridal details. Instead they get to hang out with the guys and get the groomsmen’s group shots as well as the groom’s portraits. This group of guys was particularly fun and all around great to work with. Second shooters either come along with a package booked by the lead photographer, or are hired by the hour. For this particular wedding, I was booked for about 5 of the 7 hours that the lead photographer was there.
All around, I absolutely love photographing weddings, whether I’m lead or second shooting! Enjoy some of the highlights of Marc and Maddie’s Spruce Mountain Ranch wedding from yours truly’s perspective.
